British supermarket giant Tesco has extended its lead over rivals at the expense of Asda, the UK arm of the world's mightiest retailer Wal-Mart, according to industry data released today.
Figures from research firm TNS showed Tesco's market share rose to a record 29.5% in 12 weeks to March 27, up from 29.2% a month earlier and 27.3% a year ago.
Asda's market share slipped to 16.6% from 16.9% a month earlier.
Sainsbury's market share in the latest 12 weeks dipped to 15.9% from 16%, but was up on the 15.7% figure a year ago.
On an annual basis, Sainsbury's market growth rate was 4.1%, compared with 3% for Asda, TNS said.
