Euro cushion for oil price rises

Petrol prices - More hikes on the way?

The price of a litre of petrol rose by 1.4 cent per litre in the last month and now costs an average of 95.9 cent at the pumps, according to the latest survey of fuel prices by motoring organisation the AA.

The price of diesel rose by only 0.3 cent to its current level of 94.4 cent per litre.

'Petrol prices have not risen too significantly since the start of the year, but that may be about to change,' said AA public affairs manager Conor Faughnan.

He said oil prices had risen to new record highs, but Ireland had been cushioned by a rise in the value of the euro against the dollar, which has left petrol prices largely unaffected.

The AA has repeated its call for motorists to shop around for petrol.
