Anglo Irish Bank makes good start

The chairman of Anglo Irish Bank has told shareholders that the bank has made a good start to its financial year, with strong trading in all its divisions.

Peter Murray told the company's AGM that it would continue to focus on its core businesses in its existing markets. He said the bank would continue to look at acquisition opportunities, but only if they were in line with its long-term strategy and met Anglo's 'stringent criteria'.

The meeting is Mr Murray's last as chairman. He paid tribute to retiring chief executive Sean Fitzpatrick, who now takes over as chairman.
