Martin backs looser store size rules

The Minister for  Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin, has said he favours a relaxation of the retail planning guidelines, which set a limit on the size of supermarkets.

Speaking in the Dail, Mr Martin said such a change would be good for consumers, and had the backing of the Competition Authority.

The Minister added that his colleague, Environment Minister Dick Roche, would soon make an announcement on changes to the planning laws. But Mr Martin said the Government was not considering abolishing the retail planning restrictions completely.
