The Irish Bank Officials Association is to hold talks with the chief executive of National Irish Bank and Northern Bank today on plans by their parent company to sell both banks.

Last week, National Australia Bank said it had received several expressions of interest in the banks, and that the options were being explored.

IBOA general secretary Larry Broderick, speaking before today's talks, said the union was 'appalled' at the way the process was being managed. He said customers were regularly asking staff what was going on.

He criticised NAB's 'procrastination' and called on management to clarify future plans for the banks. The union is to seek guarantees that there will be no compulsory redundancies or branch closures.
