The cost of doing business in Ireland is on average 20% higher than in the UK, Tesco Ireland has told the Dail Committee on Enterprise and Small Business.
The committee is investigating why food prices here are higher than in the UK and Europe.
Gordon Fryett of Tesco Ireland told the committee that labour and pay costs were around 20% higher here than in the UK, while transport and distribution costs were about 28% higher. The cost of cleaning stores is around 70% higher here, while waste management costs are 250% higher than in the UK, he says.
