The number of new private cars licensed in September 2004 was up 8.2% on the same month last year. Figures from the Central Statistics Office say that 7,390 new private cars were licensed in September compared to 6,830 in September 2003.
The CSO adds that in the first nine months of 2004, there were 138,071 new private cars licensed, an increase of 5.5% on the same time last year.
First licensing of second hand private cars increased by 803 (64.9%) on the same month last year and increased by 4,884, or over 50%, in the year to date.
New goods vehicles licensed increased by 19.9% in September 2004 when compared to September 2003 and increased by 0.2% in the first nine months of the year compared to the same time last year.
The CSO figures reveal that the most popular brand of new car licensed last month was Toyota (992), followed by Volkswagen (730), Ford (631), Renault (546), Peugeot (529) and Nissan (493).
