Irish firms expanding in Malaysia

A number of major business contracts by Irish companies operating in Malaysia were announced today by Enterprise Ireland. Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is currently on a state visit to the country.

Dublin-based Parc Aviation Training has secured a new deal with AirAsia, whereby the Malaysian airline may select Parc's professionally trained career pilots to work with it.

Parc Aviation supplies personnel solutions and training to the aviation industry and is based in Santry, Dublin. The company was launched in 1975 and operates in 30 countries worldwide with over 700 people working on contracts to various clients.

Anam Mobile, a provider of multi-media platforms to telecom operators has established its Asia headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. Anam has customers in Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. The company said it sees Malaysia as a country with a strong base of experienced software engineers.

A contract has also been awarded to Edward and Sons, and their international partner, Datac Control International, for the Bukun dam project in Malaysia. The contract is for the supply of remote control and monitoring systems for the hydroelectric dam project, which is expected to take five years to complete.

Datac - an Irish based conglomerate - will provide equipment for remote monitoring stations upstream and downstream of the dam to measure the river flows and levels for efficient and safe operation of the dame. Edward & Sons will provide the local knowledge and expertise to set up the system in remote and inaccessible areas.

Dublin City University has agreed deals with two Malaysian institutions - Technology Park Malaysia Academy and International Islamic University Malaysia - to strengthen collaboration between the two countries. The agreement will also promote research student and staff mobility.

Kerry Ingredients, part of the Kerry food group, employs 180 people in the manufacture of specialty lipid, cheese powders and flavourings at Johor Bahru in Malaysia. The company recently bought Quest Food Ingredients from the ICI Group. Quest has a major emulsifier plant in Kuala Lumpur, employing about 70 people.

Other companies expanding their presence in Malaysia include business process outsourcing solutions Freagra Business Solutions, International Eurobond Consultants and two Galway based companies Monicon Technology and Storm Technology.
