Iarnrod Eireann says there may be a small impact on jobs in Rosslare port due to the closure of ferry company P&O's Rosslare-Cherbourg route.
90 Iarnrod Eireann dock workers are, amonst other duties, involved in the loading and unloading of the ship.
The company says there will be a minor loss in revenue due to the loss of business from P&O. Iarnrod Eireann says it will have talks with P&O shortly. It hopes another company will take over the route.
The P&O closure was announced this morning as part of a restructuring of its ferries business.
The company plans to close four of its 13 ferry routes with the loss of about 1,200 jobs, and reduce the number of ships it operates from 31 to 23. A spokesperson for P&O Irish Sea Ferries says very few Irish jobs will be lost.
The moves are expected to save £55m a year for the company, which has been by competition from low-cost airlines.
P&O hopes the restructuring will be largely in place by the middle of next year, but says the proposals are subject to consultation with employees.
The company operates three other Irish Sea routes - from Dublin to Liverpool and from Larne to Cairnryan and Troon.
