US pharmaceuticals company Pfizer confirmed this morning it is to invest €240m in an expansion of its existing plant in Dun Laoghaire

RTE first reported in May that the company lodged a planning application for a 28,000 square metre expansion of its plant in south Dublin.

The investment will lead to the creation of 200 new jobs over the next five years. The investment is supported by IDA Ireland and was welcomed today in a statement from the Taoiseach.

'This expansion of the Dublin Laoghaire plant is certainly good news for the continued growth of Ireland as a key strategic location for pharmaceutical manufacturing and investment and in terms of high quality job creation,' commented Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.

'Investments in pharmaceutical innovation are essential to our future economic wealth and the health of our citizens,' he added.

The Dun Laoghaire plant currently employs 150 people. The company develops, manufactures and markets medicines in human health, consumer health and animal health.

'The expansion of Pfizer's manufacturing capability at Dun Laoghaire reflects our continuing commitment to invest in Ireland,' commented John Mitchell, President of Pfizer Global Manufacturing.

'The skilled workforce and welcoming business environment in Ireland serve as a model for other countries that wish to attract or retain a vibrant pharmaceutical industry presence,' he added.

The company employs more than 2,000 people in Ireland at nine operations in Cork and Dublin.
