Crystal union rejects short-time plan

Talks between management and union representatives at Waterford Crystal are taking place today, following the rejection last night by staff of management proposals for short-time working.

Earlier this week management at Waterford Crystal said staff would have to take seven weeks unpaid leave between now and March to enable the company could reduce the amount of stock it has in its Waterford and Dungarvan facilities.

The company also stated the move was necessary to release cash for marketing purposes.

Last night members of the ATGWU in the 1,400 strong workforce overwhelmingly rejected the short-time working proposals, saying there was no credible sales or marketing plan. Union representatives say they are willing to discuss other short-time working arrangements if a number of criteria are met.
