Workers can expect tax moves - McCreevy

Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy has said he has no disagreement with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions' assumption that workers can expect improvements in take home pay in forthcoming budgets.

Mr McCreevy said that he would not have an argument with the comment by ICTU general secretary David Begg.

Mr Begg had said in advance of tomorrow's vote by unions on the new national pay deal that workers could expect reductions in the tax burden as well as the 5.5% pay rise promised in the deal.

This morning Mr McCreevy said December's budget was a matter for the Government and his successor as Minister for Finance but that he had no disagreement with what Mr Begg had said.
