SIPTU calls off Aer Lingus meetings

Willie Walsh - SIPTU talks offer

A threat to Aer Lingus flights this weekend has been lifted with the acceptance by SIPTU of an invitation from management for talks to take place tomorrow.

SIPTU had threatened to call general meetings of its members to take place on Saturday.

Earlier this afternoon Aer Lingus chief executive Willie Walsh wrote to SIPTU's national industrial secretary Michael Halpenny offering a full meeting with his management team to take place tomorrow morning at 8am.

This followed a threat made last night by SIPTU to hold general meetings of its members at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports tomorrow, a move that would have led to the disruption of flights.

SIPTU has accepted Mr Walsh's offer but is still calling for the lifting of next month's deadline for accepting the company's redundancy offer. Aer Lingus is looking for over 1,300 redundancies as part of its new business plan. SIPTU is also opposed to plans to outsource some services.
