Aer Lingus - 90% of SIPTU workers vote for industrial action

SIPTU members at Aer Lingus have voted by a majority of over 90% in favour of industrial action at the airline.

The vote was in response to a new business plan from management.

1,325 jobs are to be cut over three years through voluntary redundancies and outsourcing under the airline's proposals. Cabin crew, baggage handlers, check-in and catering staff will be worst hit.

Aer Lingus says the cuts are needed to remain competitive and to allow investment in new aircraft and routes. Workers have already laid down their demands for redundancy - nine weeks of pay per year of service.

The company issued a statement this afternoon saying it will continue with its business plan regardless of the outcome of the ballot.
