Jurys Doyle to redevelop Cork hotel

Cork redevelopment - Plans announced

Jurys Doyle has said it plans to demolish its hotel on the Western Road in Cork and, in a joint initiative with O'Callaghan Properties, build a new 185 bedroom facility and 300 apartments.

If given the go-ahead by planners, it will be one of the largest construction projects in Cork next year.

However, there is a question mark over the jobs of those working at Jurys on the Western Road. The hotel currently employs 110 people full time or up to 145 whole time equivalents when casual workers are considered.

Staff have been told that during the period between demolition and construction they can either be relocated within the company, take early retirement where appropriate, or possibly take redundancy. They will be offered positions in the new hotel when it opens.

Assuming planning permission is granted, the redevelopment will see the construction of a new six storey 185 bedroom four star hotel, bar and restaurant, leisure facilities and a 150 space underground car park on the site.

The project will be part of a major 'mixed use' redevelopment which will include the hotel, leisure facilities, 300 apartments and a further 300 underground car park spaces. Jurys Doyle will operate the hotel on a 35 year lease.

It is hoped the first phase of the residential development and the construction of the new hotel will take up to two years to complete and should be finished by summer 2006.

Shares in Jurys Doyle closed 23 cent lower at €10.30 in Dublin this evening.
