Bank of Ireland has confirmed that it is to introduce enhanced security following a number of 'hole in the wall' type attacks on its branch ATMs in recent weeks.

The bank's media relations manager Anne Mathews said it was conscious of the need to bring in better security measures in a number of remote branch locations.

'We have identified a small number of locations that could potentially be vulnerable to similar type attacks.  It is our intention to remove the cash from these ATMs after close of business until the new security features are in place,' she said.

Bank of Ireland said this would affect only a very small number of branches and was a short-term measure in order to protect the continuity of service to customers.

It apologised to any customers affected but confirmed that retail ATMs were available in all the identified locations.
