SIPTU is to hold a protective ballot for industrial action at Aer Lingus over the next two weeks.
The union says this is to ensure it can take immediate action if management attempts to enforce job cuts or any other changes unilaterally.
Meeting this afternoon, SIPTU shop stewards representing 2,000 Aer Lingus employees in Dublin, Cork and Shannon told members not to volunteer for redundancy or agree to any changes ahead of the conclusion of negotiations with the company on its proposed plans.
Management and unions at Aer Lingus met yesterday to discuss a new three-year business plan agreed by the board of the company on Monday. The plans are reported to include 1,300 job cuts.
