US Airways profits 'not enough'

US Airways more than doubled net profits in the three months to the end of June, but it said this was not enough to keep the carrier viable in 2005 without deeper cost-cutting.

Net profit climbed to $34m in the quarter from $13m a year earlier. Sales advanced 10% to $1.76 billion.

'Despite posting a slight profit this quarter, our year-to-date loss of $143m is unsustainable and the competitive environment continues to intensify,' said chief financial officer David Davis.

US Airways should have done much better in the second quarter, traditionally its best, said president and chief executive Bruce Lakefield.
