Longer lives make pensions dearer

The Pensions Board has said the continuing improvement in life expectancy is making pensions more expensive.

Chief executive Anne Maher pointed to CSO figures showing that male life expectancy at age 65 is now 15.4 years, while the figure for females is 18.7. She said the figure for males represented an 11% improvement over the last six years.

Speaking at the launch of the board's annual report, Ms Maher said just under 27,000 Personal Retirement Savings Accounts (PRSAs) had been taken out by the end of March.

She described sales so far as 'steady', saying further initiatives would be considered to encourage sales further.
