EU backs Irish emissions plan

The European Commission has approved Ireland's plans for national emissions trading.

EU government have outlined proposals to cut industrial emissions of carbon dioxide under the scheme, which will start in January.

The emissions trading programme is part of the EU's effort to meet its commitments under the Kyoto protocol on climate change.

The plans of four other countries were approved, but the Commission rejected parts of the schemes from Austria, Germany and Britain.

Under the scheme, major energy users will be allocated emission allowances. Those who cut emissions will be able to sell their allowances on the market.
