Alitalia gets €400m government loan

The Italian government has approved a €400m bridging loan to Alitalia to help the struggling state-controlled airline stay afloat pending a rescue plan.

Alitalia, which is 62.39% owned by the state, is in a deep financial crisis and faces the possibility of bankruptcy unless drastic measures are taken, according to its auditor Deloitte and Touche.

Trading in shares of the airline were suspended on the Milan market early this morning.
