Wind energy group Airtricity has begun building the country's largest wind farm at Meentycat near Ballybofey in County Donegal.
The project will cost around €80m and is expected to be completed in early 2005.
The facility will produce 72 megawatts of energy and is bigger than the current largest wind farm at Kingsmountain in Sligo - also owned by Airtricity.
Some of the turbines will be 100 metres high, while others will be smaller in order to comply with planning rules.
