Japan's economy crawls towards recovery

Japan's central bank has maintained its view on the world's second largest economy, saying in a monthly
report that it is continuing a gradual recovery helped by growing exports.

'Japan's economy is recovering gradually,' the Bank of Japan said in its February report on recent economic and financial developments.

The bank said earlier in the day it had left its easy money policy unchanged at the end of a two-day policy meeting, promising to pump ample cash into the country's financial system.

Its assessment of the overall economic health was unchanged from January while the bank stressed the recovery was being led by strong exports.

'The decline in household income is gradually coming to a halt and private consumption is virtually flat,' it said, adding that housing investment remained sluggish and public investment was declining.
