Ryanair fears million euro Charleroi hit

Ryanair says it fears that the European Commission will ask it to pay back millions of euro if its executive rules against it in a state aid case to be delivered by the Transport Commission next Tuesday.

The case centres around whether Ryanair received unfair state aid at Belgium's Charleroi airport.

An EU source last week said that the executive was likely to rule that some advantages given by regional Belgian authorities to Ryanair are illegal.

In 2002 Belgian authorities gave Ryanair almost €4m euro towards publicity for its new routes and to subsidise introductory low fares. Ryanair is due to issue its third quarter results tomorrow.

Shares in Ryanair were down 40 cent to €6.60 in Dublin this lunchtime.
