Personal injuries board chief named

The Tánaiste has appointed Patricia Byron as CEO designate of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board with effect from February 1.

The PIAB, a key plank of the reform of the insurance market, aims to reduce the high costs associated with delivering compensation from insurance claims.

Ms Byron has worked in the insurance industry for over 20 years and has been part of the management team in Hibernian Insurance for the last five years. She has also chaired a reform programme within the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland, the body charged with administering compensation to the victims of motor accidents involving uninsured and untraced drivers.

The Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act 2003 will come into effect when the new body is ready to start dealing with cases. The Tanaiste says recruitment will begin shortly and progress has been made on securing a premises.
