The board of Aer Rianta has asked SIPTU to defer its two-hour stoppage planned for Thursday pending completion of business plans for Cork, Shannon and Dublin airports as stand alone entities.
At a special meeting this afternoon the board agreed unanimously to submit a proposal to the Minister for Transport that the board management, the Department of Transport and their advisors would co-operate to draw up the business plans.
On that basis the board has requested SIPTU to defer its industrial action. The lack of such business plans up to now has been a key flaw in the restructuring process, according to SIPTU. This development may enhance the possibility that the strike could be deferred.
SIPTU representatives are meeting to decide whether to go ahead with the strike. They say the Minister has failed to address their concerns about job security following the restructuring.
A spokesperson for Mr Brennan has said that while his officials are available to provide clarification, Government policy on the restructuring will not change.
