British health and beauty retailer Boots Group said today it was axing 900 jobs at its head office in Nottingham as part of a cost cutting drive to cope with increasing competition.
The cuts are part of a programme titled "Getting in Shape" which aims to save more than £100m (€144.45m) over the next three years for Boots, which warned in November of lower profit margins.
The company which is currently facing stiff competition from cut price grocers such as Asda, said the job losses would cost £47m (€57.78m), and deliver £39m pounds of savings.
The company cut 500 head office jobs last year, and the company had previously said more cuts would be made as new Chief Executive Richard Baker gave more control to store managers. Boots also said it would create about 290 jobs in its pharmacy, sales and operations divisions over the next year.
The company employs about 60,000 staff in total, 1,200 of these in Ireland.
