Healthy house prices push Abbey ahead

House builder Abbey has reported first-half pre-tax profits of €28.8m, 36% ahead of the same period last year.

Turnover for the six months to the end of October was just over €93m, against €88m a year earlier.

The company completed 354 sales in the period - 163 in the UK and 191 in Ireland. Abbey said the Irish market was very strong, and it was on course for 'significantly more' sales in the second half.

In the UK, Abbey said strong prices compensated for lower volume. Its UK plant hire business M&J Engineers reported profits of just over €1m, with trading hitting what was described as a 'soft spot' in the autumn.

An interim dividend of 10 cent per share has been declared. Abbey shares closed up 90 cents to €8.20 this evening on the ISEQ.
