Ann Heraty, chief executive of CPL Group, has warned of an impending shortage of skilled workers when Ireland's IT industry resumes its growth.
Heraty warned that Ireland risks a shortage of IT graduates in the coming years as a result of the declining numbers of students opting to study IT related courses. CPL Group is one of Ireland's biggest technical recruitment agencies.
According to Heraty, the number of students opting to study IT-related courses has fallen significantly over the past five years, mirroring the decline of the Irish IT industry. Yet despite signs of recovery in the IT industry, Hearty said that IT courses had not regained their popularity.
"The consequence will be a shortage of critical skills for our growing IT sector," said Heraty.
Hearty said that as students began considering their options for the CAO process in the coming weeks, it was critical that they be encouraged to apply for IT related courses
