Finance 'wants Aer Rianta split delay'

Labour leader Pat Rabbitte has claimed that the Minister for Finance opposed proceeding with legislation to break up Aer Rianta, and that the changes will have disastrous implications for the country's regional airports.

Speaking at Leaders' Questions in the Dail, Mr Rabbitte said that the memo brought to Government on Aer Rianta said that if the changes went ahead, further state aid for Kerry, Cork and Galway airports would have to be carefully assessed to avoid market distortions.

Mr Rabbitte also said that documents showed that Charlie McCreevy and his department opposed proceeding with the heads of legislation breaking up the semi-state until all the implications had been teased out.
