Italian airline 'owes $7m', court hears

The High Court has issued a temporary order restraining an Italian commercial airline from removing two giant airbuses parked at Dublin airport.

The airline, Volare Airlines, is said to owe $7.2m to Dublin-based aircraft leasing company Calliope, which is linked to one of the world's largest aircraft leasing companies, International Lease Finance Corporation.

Maurice Collins BL, for Calliope, said his client had leased the airbuses to Volare, which operates long haul flights from Italy to holiday destinations outside Europe.

Calliope had entered into a lease agreement which provided for the payment of rents and other matters by Volare.

But Calliope director Niall Sommerville said in an affidavit that the Italian airline had been in 'significant and persistent default' in making payments.
