Green light for £3 billion Equitable claim

The high court in London has ruled that assurer Equitable Life can go ahead with a £3.3 billion negligence claim against nine former directors.

Equitable, which nearly collapsed in 2000 after it lost a legal battle over guaranteed annuity policies, has accused the former directors of negligence and breach of duty.

Justice Langley rejected assertions by the nine that the case should be dismissed because it had no prospect of success. Equitable, the world's oldest life assurer, is also claiming negligence against six former executive directors.
