Ryanair calls for Commissioner's resignation

Ryanair has called for the resignation of the Commissioner for Aviation Regulation Bill Prasifka and the closure of his office, after what it called his failure to control landing charges levied by Aer Rianta.

Today Aer Rianta announced that next year landing charges at Dublin airport would increase to 5.45 euro per passenger from 5 euro, after last month the aviation regulator increased the cap on the price that could be charged from 5.27 to 5.45.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary also had strong words of criticism for the government and specifically the Taoseach Bertie Ahern's failure to push forward plans for a second terminal at Dublin airport.

Aviation Commissioner Bill Prasifka says that the annual adjustment he made last month does not reflect any change in the underlying price cap. He said the price cap mechanism always assumed year to year variations, and although it went up this year, it could go down next year.

He said a full review of airline charge would allow Ryanair to lobby for real changes to the underlying cap.

It's expected a full review will be announced later this week.
