The volume of retail sales rose by 0.4% in the year to August after a monthly increase of 1%, according to the Central Statistics Office.
The value of retail sales, which includes the effects of price changes, showed an annual rise of 2.8% in August and a monthly rise of 1.6%. Sales had fallen in both value and volume terms in July.
The three-month figure for June to August showed a 1.2% increase on the previous three months.
Detailed figures for the period from May to July show that electrical goods sales jumped by more than 9% on the previous three months, but the hardware, paints and glass sector showed an 8% fall.
