Harney to bang drum for insurance

The Tanaiste is to meet insurance companies in the US and Europe to inform them of the reforms taking place in the Irish market, in an effort to attract new entrants to the market.

Mary Harney also says that legislation to put the Personal Injuries Assessment Board will be passed before the end of the year. She says she is confident that the PIAB will be hearing cases by early next year.

Ms Harney also says new legislation requiring people to swear an affidavit in order to verify their pleadings in a case should also come into effect in early 2004. This new law is aimed at cracking down on fraudulent claims.

The Tanaiste was speaking at the Insurance Institute of Ireland's conference in County Wicklow today.
