Independent retailer Garvey Group has acquired a site on the outskirts of Castleisland, Co Kerry, for the development of a new SuperValu supermarket.
Garvey's SuperValu has operated in Castleisland since 1988 and says the new site, O'Donoghue's Garage, will allow the development of a larger store with greater facilities, as well as extensive car-parking. The 22,000 square foot development, which is subject to planning permission, involves a €6m investment, and will create up to 30 new jobs in Castleisland.
Garvey's existing store on the main street in Castleisland is expected to continue, possibly in a smaller convenience format, when the new supermarket opens. A €4m expansion and refurbishment of Garvey's SuperValu in Tralee is also in progress.
The Garvey Group also owns and operates SuperValu supermarkets in Dingle, Listowel, Cashel, Dungarvan, Newcastlewest and Grove Island in Limerick.
