Luas light at the end of the tunnel

The Railway Procurement Agency, or RPA, the agency overseeing the construction of Luas, has said that all of the major construction works currently underway in Dublin city centre will be finished by Christmas.

In a statement, the agency says the bulk of the heavy work of shifting underground services and installing the Luas railtrack is nearing completion in areas such as Harcourt Street, Middle Abbey Street, St Stephen's Green and Beresford Place.

It says that between now and Christmas, track works - including laying the foundation and tracks themselves - will be completed. Luas tracks will be in place in Middle Abbey Street by the end of August.

The RPA says it appreciates that construction has brought problems for motorists, pedestrians and business people. But its chief executive, Frank Allen, says he believes the gain in terms of public transport will be considerable.

The statement says new road surfaces and footpaths in most city centre areas, will be completed by Christmas.
