The Revenue Commissioners have published the largest ever single list of tax defaulters with whom they reached settlements in the first three months of this year.
The list includes 285 names and is heavily dominated by holders of bogus non-resident accounts.
The average settlement paid by the tax defaulters amounted to €100,000. Typically this was about four times the original tax due on the monies held in the bogus accounts.
The largest settlement involved a company called JM Carpets Ltd from Waterford who paid €2.64m. The second largest was paid by a director of that company, John Murphy of Grantstown, Waterford who paid €2.24m.
Amongst the 285 defaulters there were 13 deceased people who have been unable to escape the revenue, one of them, Dermot O'Brien of Cahir, Co Tipperary, paid up more than €450,000.
The Revenue Commissioners used new powers to gain access to bank information to track down this latest set of defaulters.
