Japan growth ahead of target

Japan's gross domestic product expanded 0.1% in the three months to March, according to revised figures of the earlier reported flat growth, the government said this morning.

The revised data marked quarterly growth for the fifth time in a row for the country's struggling economy in real terms, which provides for adjustments for inflation and seasonal variations.

As a result, the world's second biggest economy registered real growth of 1.5% in the year to March 2003, well above the government's target of 0.9%.
