380 jobs from new Dublin drug plant

A pharmaceutical company is to create 380 new jobs in north Dublin in a project worth €40m. Gerard Laboratories has been in Ireland since 1986 and already employs 300 people at its plant in Baldoyle, north Dublin. The company is owned by German pharmaceutical giant Merck. Baldoyle is its European manufacturing centre for generic drugs.

Tanaiste Mary Harney had indicated that a positive jobs boost would be announced for the north Dublin area following last week's closure of Celestica with the loss of 250 jobs.

This IDA backed €40m investment will involve the construction of a new facility in Baldoyle. Over 300 jobs will be created over the next six years. The jobs will be in production, maintenance and administration.

Gerard makes tablets and capsules for gastro-intestinal and heart treatment drugs and is the biggest supplier of these medicines to the Irish market.
