The Irish Insurance Federation and employers' group IBEC have launched a new code aimed at improving the relationship between business policyholders and insurance companies.
The guidelines set out responsibilities to be taken by both the poicyholder and insurer in the event of an accident.
'The main purpose of the guidelines is to formalise the communications process involved with regard to personal injury claims,' said IBEC director general Turlough O'Sullivan.
Under the code, commercial policyholders can offer views as to the timing and amount of any settlement in the event of a claim. Insurers have undertaken to consult policyholders in advance of any proposed settlement discussions and to take their views into account.
