Co Derry firm to close two factories

A Co Derry firm has announced that it is to close two of its factories, resulting in the loss of 315 jobs.

The Desmond firm employs 1,800 people in the North and has a global workforce of some 7,000.

170 employees will be let go at the Springtown plant in the city with a further 133 job losses at Dungiven. The two plants produce trousers and jeans for both men and women.

The company has said the decision has been taken with regret but it was left with no alternative in order to match production capacity to market conditions. Production at the two factories was no longer viable, it added.
