The ESB has awarded a £180 million sterling contract for the construction of the new Coolkeeragh power plant in Northern Ireland. A consortium of General Electric of the US and VA Tech of Austria will build the new plant.
Work on the new plant in Derry will get underway later this month. The ESB says that during its peak, the construction work will employ up to 600 people.
Planning permission and Northern Ireland government approval to build the new plant were granted last year.
General Electric is the world leader in gas turbine power plant construction while VA Tech is one of the leading European engineering and construction companies of equipment and services for combined cycle power plants.
