An Post chief executive John Hynes is to retire from the company at the end of his current contract in July 2003.
Mr Hynes joined An Post in 1990 and is one of the commercial State sector's longest serving chief executives.
He said he had told chairman Stephen O'Connor of his decision now so that an orderly process could be initiated to ensure a smooth transition.
