400 new medical devices jobs for Galway

US-based medical technology company Medtronic is to expand its Galway facilities in a move expected to create 400 new jobs over the next five years.

Medtronic, with the support of IDA Ireland, is to set up a new R&D and manufacturing centre of excellence for its Cardiac Rythm Management Division. The new facility will be beside the company's existing plant at Parkmore Business Park, which employs 1,300 people.

Tanaiste Mary Harney, who made the announcement, described the news as one of the most important medical devices investments in the country.

She said the new jobs would require a mix of skills across a range of technology and science areas.
