Geldof joins UK anti-euro campaign

Singer Bob Geldof has thrown his weight behind the campaign against Britain adopting the euro through an advertisement, launched today, that will be screened at cinemas across the UK.

The former Boomtown Rats singer will join other celebrities supporting the 'No' campaign to tell the British: 'You know it's not anti-European to be against the euro,' in a video to be shown at cinemas from July 12 until September.

Geldof said he had not heard one argument which 'stacks up' for Britain entering the single European currency.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has made clear he wants to see Britain join the 12 European Union partners which have adopted the euro.

But his Labour government has said five tests of economic convergence must be met first and Blair has pledged to carry out an economic assessment by the next June. Britons will then be asked to vote on the euro in a referendum.

The video, also featuring other anti-euro celebrities such as British comedian Harry Enfield, was launched as the single currency neared symbolically important parity with the dollar for the first time in over two and a half years.
