'Substantial' progress on tax fraud

The Chairman of the Revenue Commissioners, Frank Daly, has said substantial progress has been made on investigations into tax fraud this year.

In their annual report published today, the Commissioners said 3,675 bogus non-resident account holders had paid over €227 million under the voluntary disclosure scheme.

Investigations into Ansbacher and the NIB scheme yielded a total of €54 million and revenues taken from the DIRT investigation were now at €447 million.

However, tax collection levels were below the budget forecast. The Commissioners said this was because of the unforeseen economic slowdown, but added that net tax and duty receipts still reached record levels of just over €28 billion.

Today's report from the Revenue Commissioners said that four prison sentences were handed down last year for serious tax evasion.

Revenue Chairman Frank Daly said their commitment to pursuing all form of evasion was absolute.
