Iraq beef: Goodman firm's admission

The Master of the High Court has decided that the State can have access to a number of documents relating to the Goodman organisation's contracts to supply beef to Iraq and the sources of beef supplied to Iraq.

The rulings are related to a case taken by Anglo Irish Beef Processors against the State over the cancelling of export credit insurance.

It has emerged that AIBP has now admitted that it was aware that some of the beef exported was sourced outside the State.

The judge said that of £125m still due to AIBP under contracts allegedly covered by two insurance contracts, over £50m related to beef sourced in Uruguay and Brazil and over £30m to Northern Irish and 'other EU' beef.

In his ruling the Master says that he is satisfied that 'the falsity of the representations made by the insured is clearly material to the issue of whether any contract can be enforced, and that the same dishonesty breached the terms of the contracts with the Iraqis'.
