The Irish Insurance Federation has expressed concern about legislation currently going through the Dail which will increase the level damages the circuit and district courts can award in civil cases.
The Court and Court Officers Bill proposes increasing the limits at the circuit and district courts to €100,000 and €20,000, from their previous levels of €38,000 and just over €6,000 respectively.
IIF chief exective Michael Kemp says the move will lead to higher damages awards and inevitably higher insurance premiums.
The IIF is arguing for limits of €50,000 and €8,000, with increases in line with inflation every three years.
