Job losses in Galway and Drogheda

160 temporary workers at Boston Scientific in Galway are to be laid off as the US medical devices manufacturer says it will have no need for them over the coming months.

Boston Scientific has about 160 temporary contract workers in Galway at present. 40 of these workers will be leaving at the end of March, while the others will finish, as their contracts run out, between April and the end of June.

The company explained that the contract staff were hired last year to transfer a number of product lines, a task now complete.

The company's Galway facility is one of four in Ireland. The others are in Cork, Tullamore and Letterkenny. Together the four locations employ more than 3,000 people. Galway is the largest with more than 2,000 employees on site.

Meanwhile, BD Medical Systems, a US medical equipment company, has also announced that it is seeking 95 redundancies at its Drogheda plant where it employs 190. The company says the Co Louth job cuts are part of a restructuring of BD's operations worldwide.

BD intends to keep its Drogheda factory open, however, and is investing in new equipment which it believes will secure the future of the plant.

The company also employ 320 at their plant in Dun Laoghaire. Today's announcement will have no effect on its operations there.
